Headquarters Building – Te Mahere


The 1930’s art deco RNZAF Headquarters building has been refurbished and re-purposed as a community facility. It is comprised of six rooms, one of which is a shared lounge that is available during office hours for the community to enjoy.

Te Mahere means to plan, to map, to chart and supports the historical theme of travel. Mahere can be used when talking about mapping a journey but also when planning for something in the future. Te Mahere suits the Headquarters because the building is a space where members of the community can come together, to meet, to learn and ‘plan for’ the future of the community.

The maximum capacity of the Headquarters Building across all hirers/rooms is 100 due to fire safety ratings. There is also a maximum of 50 people in the Catalina room and 50 people total across the DeHavilland and Bell combined rooms.

It is available for hire from 7am to 10pm.

How to book

Bookings for the Headquarters Building are available through an online booking system linked above. If you wish to become a regular hirer of an ongoing hire slot, please email [email protected]

All rooms in each venue are available from 7am-10pm daily. The exception is the Baffin Lounge which is currently being kept available to all members of the community for dropping in to relax or have a chat with one of our venue team from 10am – 2pm, Monday-Friday. This may change in the future depending on demand.  If you need the facilities outside of the 7am-10pm window, this may be possible with pre-approval from one of our venue team. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

All bookings need to include time for setup, arrival meet & greet, packdown and cleaning. Minimum booking time is 1 hour. Hire can then increase in 15 minute increments.

The community facilities are available to all and the hire rates are listed below. They have been worked through in consultation with Auckland Council. There is a discounted rate noted below for not-for-profit community groups of 40% of the personal/business rate. Special community events/initiatives that contribute directly to targeted community outcomes may be eligible for additional discounting. This will be on a case by case basis only.

NB: Online bookings can only be made at least 72 hours in advance. Otherwise bookings need to be made via email ([email protected]) and will only be responded to during our staffed hours of Monday-Friday 9.15am-2.45pm. Weekend access is not possible if bookings have not been confirmed by Friday 2.45pm.

Alcohol Policy

Alcohol is not allowed for private functions. An exception for limited alcohol however may be made for weddings in the Sunderland Lounge, and for business functions and community events of a suitable nature across either venue. This is subject to the hirer meeting the conditions of hire in relation to alcohol. Details can be found in our Venue Hire Conditions Document.
